UK PM Faces Pressure from Cabinet Members to Recognize Palestinian State
Global Condemnation of Israel's Conduct in Gaza Increases Calls for Recognition of Palestinian Statehood.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is under mounting pressure from his ministers to recognize a Palestinian state, as global condemnation of Israel's actions in Gaza continues.
Senior members of Starmer's Cabinet have reportedly advocated for the UK to take a leading role in international recognition at recent meetings.
The UK has historically pledged to support Palestinian statehood alongside other Western countries but has faced growing frustration due to the deaths of numerous Palestinians in Gaza, where food aid sites were targeted by Israel's military.
One minister questioned when the symbolic recognition of Palestinian statehood would occur if not now.
Additionally, almost 60 Labour Party MPs recently called for the immediate recognition of Palestine as a state.
This call came in response to Israel's plan to relocate all residents of Gaza to a camp in the destroyed city of Rafah.
French President Emmanuel Macron has also emphasized the two-state solution as essential for resolving the conflict and achieving regional peace, though he faces resistance from countries like Britain and Canada.
A planned conference co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France aims to garner international support for this solution.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated that while the UK will 'play its part' in finding a solution, there has been no discernible process leading to recognition.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting condemned Israel's attacks on healthcare workers and civilians in Gaza, calling for Palestinian recognition 'while there's still a state of Palestine left to recognize.' This sentiment is echoed by other ministers who have advocated for recognition, including Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Northern Ireland State Secretary Hilary Benn.
