'A Free Ukraine': Kyiv Protests Law Threatening Anti-Corruption Bodies
Demonstrators rally against legislation curbing the power of anti-corruption agencies, warning that the fight for Ukraine's democracy is taking place both on the battlefield and at home.
At a rare protest in central Kyiv, demonstrators rallied on Wednesday to express their opposition to a law that would limit the independence of two key anti-corruption bodies.
This development marks the first significant protests in Ukraine since the country began defending itself against Russian invasion over three years ago.
The legislation in question removes the autonomy of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO), placing them under the direct authority of the prosecutor general, who is appointed by the president.
Critics argue that this change could facilitate presidential interference in corruption investigations and endanger the independence of these crucial institutions in Ukraine.
