The third round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine commenced on Wednesday evening in Istanbul.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan addressed the opening session, emphasizing the urgent need for an end to the ongoing conflict.
Fidan expressed that the primary goal is to establish a ceasefire, which would ultimately lead to lasting peace.
Turkiye, known for maintaining cordial relationships with both Russia and Ukraine, has supplied drones to Ukraine while refraining from supporting Western sanctions against Moscow.
Fidan extended gratitude to leaders Vladimir Putin of Russia and Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine for their commitment to the talks, as well as to US President
Donald Trump for advocating an end to the war.
Fidan highlighted the achievements of previous rounds, specifically the significant prisoner exchanges that have garnered appreciation from the international community due to their humanitarian impact.
Additionally, Fidan recognized the progress made during the second round with the exchange of memoranda outlining perspectives on a ceasefire and peace.
The Foreign Minister expressed optimism for this third round, hoping that the parties would engage in productive discussions regarding the memorandums exchanged.
Fidan also stated that if a ceasefire is agreed upon, Turkiye possesses the necessary infrastructure to establish an effective monitoring mechanism.
The Istanbul talks present an opportunity to demonstrate globally the effectiveness of diplomacy and dialogue over conflict and militarization in achieving peace.
