UN Demands Justice in Israeli Probes of Gaza Killings
The UN rights office calls for accountability and justice in investigations following the deadly hospital strike in Gaza.
GENEVA: The United Nations has emphasized the necessity for Israel to conduct thorough and result-oriented investigations into alleged unlawful killings, particularly after a strike on Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis resulted in the deaths of at least 20 individuals, including five journalists.
This incident, which sparked international condemnation, prompted the UN rights office to reiterate its stance on the protection of journalists in conflict zones.
The UN rights office spokesperson, Thameen Al-Kheetan, stressed that justice is imperative in addressing concerns raised by the high number of media workers killed during the recent Gaza war.
Specifically, he highlighted the need for investigation into potential 'double-tap' strikes that target rescue workers and civilians following initial attacks.
According to Al-Kheetan, at least 247 Palestinian journalists have lost their lives since Hamas initiated its unprecedented attack on Israel in October 2023.
He underscored the significance of these individuals as 'the eyes and ears of the whole world,' urging for their protection.
The Israeli military has announced its intention to investigate Monday's hospital strike, following outcry from organizations such as Reuters, the Associated Press, and Al Jazeera over the loss of life among their journalist contributors.
However, the UN rights office remains critical, calling for tangible results and accountability measures stemming from these investigations.
