Australia Blames Iran for Antisemitic Attacks, Expels Ambassador
Australian Government Alleges Iranian Government Directed Attacks on Jewish Targets in Sydney and Melbourne; Orders Ambassador to Leave Within Seven Days.
The Australian government has accused the Iranian government of orchestrating antisemitic attacks in Sydney and Melbourne.
In response, Australia plans to expel Iran's ambassador and designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the attacks as 'extraordinary and dangerous acts of aggression,' emphasizing that no individuals were injured during these incidents last year.
The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) has gathered intelligence suggesting that Iran was likely behind the attacks on the Lewis Continental Kitchen in Sydney and the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne.
This marks the first time since World War Two that Australia has expelled an ambassador.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong has called for Australians to avoid travel to Iran, urging those currently present to leave if possible.
