NEW DELHI: Three people were killed and more than a dozen hospitalized on Sunday following a sudden crowd surge at a popular Hindu festival in eastern India, according to Siddharth Shankar Swain, a senior government official based in Puri.
The incident occurred when a large number of devotees surged forward to catch a glimpse of the deities during the festival.
Fifteen people were rushed to a local government hospital, where three were pronounced dead and 12 discharged.
Autopsies are planned for the deceased to determine the exact cause of death.
The festival, known as 'Rath Yatra,' or chariot festival, draws hundreds of thousands of devotees annually from across India and the world.
