Saudi Leadership Congratulates Paul Biya on Cameroon Re-Election
King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman send messages of support following the Cameroonian president’s eighth term victory
Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have extended their congratulations to Cameroonian President Paul Biya following his re-election.
The messages reaffirmed the longstanding ties between the two nations and expressed wishes for prosperity and stability for the Cameroonian people and government.
The cables highlighted “the distinguished relations between the two countries and their peoples,” emphasizing Saudi Arabia’s commitment to further strengthening cooperation in all fields.
The congratulatory messages arrived shortly after Biya was declared the winner of the October presidential election with 53.66 per cent of the vote, securing a new seven-year mandate, his eighth term in office.
The election, which took place on October 12, was marred by opposition claims of vote irregularities and episodes of violence.
Observers report at least four people died in protests in Douala and other regions in the immediate aftermath of the announcement.
While the congratulatory messages focus on bilateral relations, the election context raises broader questions about governance and social cohesion in Cameroon, which has been ruled by Biya since 1982. Saudi Arabia’s outreach reflects its broader diplomatic engagements with African states and its interest in reinforcing ties across the continent.
The Saudi messages thus carry both a congratulatory tone and an underpinning of strategic diplomacy in the region.
