Saudi Irrigation Delegation Joins Malaysia Meeting on Global Water Management
The Saudi Irrigation Organization's participation in the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage meeting highlights strategic water management.
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — The Saudi Irrigation Organization has recently taken part in the third meeting of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage, held concurrently with the fourth World Irrigation Forum in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
According to reports from the Saudi Press Agency, the meeting brought together members of a high-level advisory group.Mohammed bin Zaid Abu-Haid, CEO of the Saudi Irrigation Organization, underscored that irrigation has evolved beyond its traditional role within agriculture and now encompasses national resilience, food security, and environmental sustainability.
He pointed out that countries facing water scarcity are confronted with significant challenges, as agriculture is the largest consumer of water resources.
The Kingdom's reliance on non-renewable sources for agriculture places water management high on Saudi Arabia’s strategic agenda.Abu-Haid highlighted the efforts of his organization to foster sustainable and reusable water sources, advocating a transition through capacity building, sector excellence, and regulatory frameworks that ensure long-term sustainability.
He extended an invitation to members of the commission and international partners to collaborate in the 11th World Water Forum set to take place in Riyadh in 2027.Participants at the meeting emphasized the necessity of modernizing irrigation and agricultural infrastructure, utilizing integrated water resources management principles.
This approach is deemed crucial for achieving sustainable food security amid pressing global issues such as climate change, water scarcity, and growing demand for food.
