Saudi Arabia Strengthens Ties with Central Asian Countries through Increased Collaboration
Saudi Arabia is looking to strengthen its ties with Central Asian countries through increased collaboration, according to the Kingdom's Investment Minister Khalid Al-Falih.
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) hosted a summit with the five Central Asian countries, including Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan, in Jeddah to confirm the Kingdom's regional position and explore opportunities for economic and investment relations.
The relationship between Saudi Arabia and Central Asian countries is deep-rooted due to the religious bond that has tied the Muslims in the region for 14 centuries.
The Kingdom's relations with the Central Asian countries have been further strengthened by the development plans laid out by these countries, which align with the vision statements of the GCC.
The GCC and Central Asian countries share similar goals, particularly in the economic and investment fields, despite their differences in details.
Bilateral trade between Saudi Arabia and Central Asian countries has already begun, and the Kingdom has already invested in major infrastructure projects in Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan.
The Fawaz Al-Hokair Group also has investment plans in the tourism sector of Kazakhstan, while the Dr. Sulaiman Al-Habib Medical Group has signed memorandums of understanding to invest in Uzbekistan’s health sector.
Saudi airlines such as flynas have linked the Kingdom with some Central Asian countries, and the Air Al-Jouf Investment Company has invested in the agricultural sector of Uzbekistan.
The GCC-C5 Summit was held to confirm the Kingdom's position in the region and explore opportunities for economic and investment relations.
In addition, Zaid Bin Ali Al-Fudhail, head of the cultural program at the Gulf Research Center, stated that the GCC countries' strategic move towards Central Asia follows the openness era and globally collective partnerships the world is experiencing.
He added that the unipolar conception to impose the West's agenda should be stopped, and the idea related to climate is a Western concept used to pressure others for their interests.
Overall, the Saudi Arabia-Central Asia collaboration is a promising development that could Saudi Arabia's Minister of Economy and Planning, Faisal Al-Ibrahim, has recently held meetings with top officials from the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU) during the High-Level Political Forum 2023 in New York.
During his meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Al-Ibrahim and Guterres discussed common issues in the fields of sustainable development and explored ways for further cooperation between the Kingdom and the UN.
They also exchanged views on the latest developments in sustainable development.
The Saudi minister also met with Austrian Minister of EU Affairs Karoline Edtstadler, where they discussed bilateral relations between their respective countries and reviewed the latest developments in sustainable development.
Deputy Minister of Economy and Planning Ammar Nagadi also attended the meetings, which aimed to strengthen the Kingdom's partnership with international organizations and further its commitment to sustainable development.
The High-Level Political Forum 2023 is an annual event that brings together leaders from governments, the private sector, civil society, and academia to discuss sustainable development goals and find ways to achieve them.
