Saudi Arabia's Sports Ministry Tenders Contracts to Expand Stadiums Ahead of 2027 AFC Asian Cup
Saudi Arabia's Sports Ministry is expanding Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium in Riyadh from 22,188 seats to 45,000 seats in preparation for hosting the Asian Football Confederation Asian Cup in 2027.
This is part of Saudi Arabia's SR10.1 billion ($2.7 billion) capital projects program to build sports stadiums.
The ministry is accepting proposals for the expansion project until June 14.
Additionally, in April, the ministry tendered an early works contract for the expansion and development of Prince Mohammed bin Fahd Stadium in Dammam.
In July 2023, the ministry requested pre-qualification documents from firms for the main construction contracts of four stadium projects in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The initial contract included the decommissioning, demolition, and bulk excavation, as well as the relocation and setup of related facilities.
The upcoming projects aim to increase the seating capacities of King Fahd Stadium (to 92,000 seats), Prince Mohammed Bin Fahd Stadium (to 30,000 seats), and Prince Saud bin Jalawi Stadium (to 45,000 seats).
Additionally, a new sustainable New Riyadh Stadium will be built north of the city with a seating capacity of 45,000, all set for completion before the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
The ministry is planning to build 30 new training grounds and facilities near the 2027 competition stadiums.
Construction is set to begin in July 2024 and finish by December 2025.
Eighteen of these facilities will be ready for the 2026 AFC Women’s Cup.
