Saudi Arabia's Ahmed Bin Aqeel Al-Khateeb: 27 Million International Tourists in 2023, Aiming for 70 Million by 2030

Saudi Arabia's Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Bin Aqeel Al-Khateeb, announced that the country welcomed over 27 million international tourists in 2023.
Al-Khateeb, who is also the chairman of the UNWTO Executive Council, made this statement during the UN General Assembly Sustainability Week at the UN headquarters in New York City.

He highlighted Saudi Arabia's efforts to increase the number of international tourists to over 70 million by 2030.

Al-Khateeb has been leading the Saudi delegation at the event and has used his position as UNWTO chairman to boost the travel and tourism sector's representation in international forums over the past two years.

UNGA President Dennis Francis and UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili are also attending the event.

Al-Khateeb highlighted the significant support Saudi Arabia has provided to the tourism sector, leading to collaborations such as the Best Tourism Villages award, Tourism Open Minds initiative, and a team to redesign tourism's future.

Saudi Arabia's efforts have also included the tourism sector in the UNGA Sustainability Week agenda.

Under the leadership of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, Saudi Arabia has emerged as a top global tourist destination, topping the UNWTO's list for international tourist growth in 2023 and leading G20 countries in international tourist numbers.

The text summarizes a minister's commitment to sustainable development in Saudi Arabia's tourism sector.

He mentioned specific projects like NEOM and Red Sea, which aim to reduce climate impact, protect the environment, and benefit local communities.

The minister also announced plans to establish a Sustainable Tourism Global Center to accelerate the transition to climate neutrality and nature protection in the travel industry.

Additionally, he expressed satisfaction with collaborations with the UNFCCC's former Executive Secretary, Patricia Espinosa, and highlighted the Kingdom's efforts to address the sector's environmental impacts.

The text discusses the contributions of the Saudi Arabian Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Al-Khateeb, to the travel and tourism industry's sustainability efforts.

He mentioned the establishment of the World Travel and Tourism Council and the Sustainable Tourism Global Center, which presented global findings on the sector's environmental impacts.

For the first time, the carbon emissions contribution of travel and tourism was measured globally, accounting for around 8% of emissions worldwide.

By 2030, the Kingdom aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 278 million tons annually, protect 30% of its land and marine areas, and plant more than 600 million trees.

Al-Khateeb also emphasized the importance of global collaboration and cooperation to achieve sustainable development in the travel and tourism sector.

The Kingdom is hoping that its message about preserving the environment and transforming tourism into an industry that supports communities will be heard globally through an important event.
