Kirill Dmitriev believes a diplomatic solution is within reach for ending Russia's war in Ukraine.
MOSCOW/WASHINGTON: Kirill Dmitriev, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy for investment and economic cooperation, stated on Friday that he believes his country, the United States, and Ukraine are nearing a diplomatic solution to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Speaking to CNN following his arrival in Washington for discussions with U.S. officials, Dmitriev expressed optimism about the prospects for peace talks, despite recent setbacks in negotiations.
The planned summit between U.S. President
Donald Trump and Putin was put on hold due to Russia’s refusal to cease hostilities immediately, which raised doubts over the feasibility of diplomatic efforts.
Trump subsequently announced that he had canceled the proposed meeting with Putin, citing a lack of progress towards ending the war and unfavorable timing.
Dmitriev also addressed the impact of U.S.-imposed sanctions on Russian oil companies, asserting that these measures would have limited effects on the Russian economy.
He argued that as global oil prices rise, Russia’s revenue from oil exports would decrease but remain stable due to higher oil prices.
In his comments, Dmitriev provided no specifics regarding what this diplomatic solution might entail but noted a shift in Ukraine's position on the conflict.
European nations are reportedly working with Ukraine on a new ceasefire proposal that would maintain current battle lines, according to Reuters sources.
Dmitriev’s remarks suggest an openness to dialogue and compromise, although he emphasized that Russia must see its interests respected during any negotiations.
The U.S.-Russia diplomatic channel remains active despite recent tensions and economic sanctions.
Details about Dmitriev's meetings in the United States remain limited, with no confirmation on his planned discussions beyond a meeting scheduled with Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy, in Miami.
