Neom Nature Reserve's Visionary Approach to Biodiversity Conservation

Neom Nature Reserve's Visionary Approach to Biodiversity Conservation

Saudi Arabia's Neom Nature Reserve is pioneering efforts in biodiversity conservation and ecological restoration.
RIYADH: In the heart of Saudi Arabia, the Neom Nature Reserve stands as a testament to innovative environmental stewardship.

This ambitious project, spearheaded by dedicated local conservationists, aims to safeguard the region's unique ecosystems and species while leading groundbreaking conservation initiatives on a global scale.Tariq Aljohany, a field restoration specialist with extensive knowledge of native flora and fauna, plays a pivotal role in the reserve's ecological restoration efforts.

His work involves collecting seeds from indigenous plant species and nurturing them at Neom's Mneifa Plant Nursery to support active restoration programs.

These initiatives are designed to reintroduce species that have vanished due to habitat degradation, driven by human activities such as overgrazing and off-road driving.Aljohany's personal connection to the desert runs deep; he was inspired by his father's educational excursions into these landscapes since childhood.

Determined to preserve them for future generations, Aljohany has rescued and propagated rare plant species like the Caralluma petraea, now thriving in ex-situ conservation with nearly 100 individuals ready for reintroduction. The reserve's commitment extends beyond its borders; it is central to Neom's pledge to protect 95% of its area for nature.

This comprehensive strategy includes a substantial habitat restoration project aiming to plant 100 million native trees, shrubs, and grasses.

Conservation efforts also focus on reviving endangered species such as the Arabian oryx and gazelles, with successful reintroduction programs already underway.Bushra Alabdulhafith, a wildlife conservation science lead at Neom, brings her childhood love for the natural environment into her impactful work today.

Her team monitors biodiversity through camera traps, tracking the progress of reintroduced animals like Arabian wolves and red foxes, which bolsters their conservation plans.

A significant milestone was achieved with the reintroduction of over 1,100 animals across six species in the middle of this year. The Neom Nature Reserve's influence extends to marine life as well, recognized for its crucial role in safeguarding rare megafauna such as dolphins, turtles, and dugongs.

Collaborations with institutions like King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) enhance research and protection efforts for these species using cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence.Marine species conservation manager Mishari Alghurair leads the charge on protecting key marine species.

Initiatives include satellite tracking of sea turtles and seabirds, developing conservation plans for marine mammals, and creating artificial nesting habitats that have successfully increased breeding success rates for sooty falcons and ospreys.Alghurair's commitment stems from family trips to the Red Sea coast, fostering an appreciation for Saudi Arabia's rich biodiversity.

His work embodies a dedication to turning personal pride into meaningful action through innovation and collaboration, setting new standards in conservation efforts.
