Russia Bombs Kharkiv, Kills Civilian: Intensified Attacks on Ukraine; Zelensky Dismisses Top Security Official
On March 28, 2024, Russia carried out aerial bombings on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv for the first time since 2022.
At least one civilian was killed and 16 others were wounded in the attack, which caused widespread damage to residential buildings and the city's institute for emergency surgery.
Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukraine in recent days, targeting Kyiv with missile barrages and damaging energy infrastructure.
These sporadic attacks have been ongoing throughout the war, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The Kharkiv region, which lies along the front line between Ukrainian and Russian forces, has been the site of ongoing battles for over two years.
The region is experiencing increased attacks with missiles and drones, marking the first use of aerial bombs since 2022.
Ukrainian troops are facing growing Russian pressure along a 1,000 km front line, and are struggling with a shortage of personnel and ammunition.
In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed one of his top security officials, Oleksii Danilov, and replaced him with the head of Ukraine's foreign spy agency.
President Zelensky of Ukraine announced the dismissal of his National Security Council head, Oleksiy Danilov, without giving a reason and without providing details about his new assignment.
Danilov was replaced by Oleksandr Lytvynenko, who previously served as head of Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service.
The National Security Council is a policy coordination body chaired by Zelensky.
Danilov had been in the position since October 2019, shortly after Zelensky took office.
His dismissal comes after Zelensky fired Ukraine's chief military officer, Gen. Valerii Zaluzhnyi, in February and replaced him with Col. Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi due to tensions between the two following the failure of Ukraine's summer counteroffensive.
Zaluzhnyi was later named Ukraine's ambassador to the United Kingdom.
