Peru, the eighth country with the most infected with Covid-19 in the world, exceeded 200,000 cases on Tuesday, the Ministry of Health reported.
The death toll rose to 5,738, an increase of 167 in the last 24 hours, while those infected added 203,736, with 4,040 new cases, according to the latest count of the ministry.
Although Lima's hospitals are on the verge of collapse, some hopeful signs are appearing: the
coronavirus is giving way in the Peruvian Amazon, which was initially the most affected region in the country, according to official data.
Peru has been in mandatory national confinement for 12 weeks and is now in eighth place in the world among the countries with the most cases of
coronavirus, beating France, Germany and Iran.
Its economy, which was very dynamic until February, is semi-paralyzed, but textile business unions began to demand that production and sales resume immediately. Peruvian GDP contracted by 16% in March and by 3.39% in the first quarter of 2020.
The first case was detected in Peru on March 6 and 100,000 infections had been exceeded on May 20. The country is the second in Latin America in
coronavirus cases behind Brazil. In deceases it is third, after the South American giant and Mexico.
With a population of 33 million, the Andean country is maintained with a night curfew and closed borders.
