Kurdish-led SDF Confirms Five Members Killed in Daesh Attack in Eastern Syria
The Syrian Democratic Forces reported the casualties following a recent assault by Daesh remnants.
The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) has announced that five of its members were killed during an attack by Daesh, also known as ISIS, at a checkpoint located in Deir el-Zor's eastern region on July 31.
This information was disclosed by the SDF on Sunday.
In response, Daesh claimed responsibility for the attack through a statement issued on Monday.
The SDF served as the principal combat force allied with the United States during the campaign that resulted in defeating Daesh in Syria in 2019.
At its peak, Daesh controlled substantial territories in both Syria and Iraq before being ousted after proclaiming a caliphate.
Although Daesh was officially declared defeated, the group has since attempted to regroup and conduct attacks across the Middle East, parts of Asia, and Western countries.
Deir el-Zor city saw its seizure by Daesh in 2014 but was subsequently reclaimed by the Syrian army in 2017.
