North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un Meets with Families of Soldiers Killed Fighting for Russia
Kim offers condolences to families and pledges support for the troops' children.
SEOUL: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met with the families of soldiers killed fighting for Russia against Ukraine and offered condolences for their 'unbearable pain,' state media said Saturday.
The exact number of North Korean soldiers killed in Russia remains unconfirmed, though Seoul estimates around 600 casualties with thousands more wounded.
Intelligence agencies have reported that North Korea sent over 10,000 soldiers to Russia in 2024, primarily to the Kursk region, along with artillery shells, missiles, and long-range rocket systems.
Kim delivered a speech to the families after meeting some of them at a previous ceremony where honors were awarded to the soldiers.
He expressed his desire to console all bereaved families and promised to erect a monument in Pyongyang and name a new street for them.
Full state support will be provided to the children of these fallen soldiers.
