Macron Urges Unanimous Decision on Putin's Attendance at Brazil's G20 Summit
French President Emmanuel Macron stated that all G20 members must agree before inviting Russian leader Vladimir Putin to the upcoming summit in Brazil.
The decision rests with Brazilian diplomacy, and Macron suggested that a Russian attendance could be considered if it proves useful but warned against potential division.
Brazil, as the G20 chair, has opposed the US-led efforts to isolate Russia over the Ukraine invasion, believing that both sides hold some responsibility for the conflict.
Putin skipped the G20 summit in New Delhi in 2020 to avoid potential political criticism and the possibility of arrest under an ICC warrant.
In 2023, Brazil's former president Lula initially stated that Putin would not be arrested if he attended the Rio de Janeiro summit, but later clarified that the decision would be left to the justice system.
