Indian Prime Minister Modi Arrives in Tianjin Ahead of Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit
Modi's visit to China comes a day before the summit attended by over 20 countries.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the Chinese city of Tianjin on Saturday evening, as reported by Indian TV networks.
This arrival marks his first visit to China since 2018 and precedes the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit scheduled for Sunday and Monday in the northern port city.
The summit will be attended by leaders from more than 20 countries, including several key global figures.
The SCO gathering includes member states such as China, India, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus, with an additional 16 countries serving as observers or dialogue partners.
Chinese President Xi Jinping began welcoming leaders such as Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Egyptian Premier Moustafa Madbouly on Saturday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is also expected to arrive in Tianjin ahead of the summit.
China and Russia have utilized the SCO to strengthen ties with Central Asian states, positioning it sometimes as a counter to Western-dominated military alliances like NATO.
Notable attendees for this year's meeting include Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, among others.
During the summit, multiple bilateral meetings are anticipated on the sidelines.
Putin is set to discuss several key issues including the Ukraine conflict with Erdogan on Monday, as well as meet with his Iranian counterpart Pezeshkian for talks on Tehran's nuclear program.
This meeting takes place amid fresh Western pressure on Iran due to its non-compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal, which prompted Britain, France, and Germany to trigger a 'snapback' mechanism to reinstate UN sanctions against Iran.
Modi’s visit follows a trip to Japan, where significant investment of $68 billion was pledged for India.
Although Modi was not listed as an attendee for China's massive military parade in Beijing scheduled for the day after the summit, North Korea’s Kim Jong Un is expected among the 26 world leaders attending.
The SCO summit will serve as a platform for discussions on various geopolitical and economic issues while also highlighting the complex relationship dynamics between major global powers such as India and China, who have been intensifying their competition across South Asia.
A thaw in tensions began last October with Modi's meeting with President Xi Jinping at a summit in Russia following a deadly border clash in 2020.
