Modi's Visit to China for SCO Summit Marks Significant Step in Diplomatic Thaw

Modi's Visit to China for SCO Summit Marks Significant Step in Diplomatic Thaw

Indian Prime Minister's arrival in Tianjin signals potential improvement in strained relations with China.
TIANJIN, CHINA — The arrival of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tianjin on Saturday marks his first visit to China in seven years.

This development is set against the backdrop of the ongoing Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, which will run from Sunday to Monday and includes over 20 leaders such as Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian.

The SCO comprises China, India, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus, with another 16 countries participating as observers or dialogue partners.

Modi's trip follows a recent stop in Japan, where Tokyo pledged $68 billion in investment for India.

This visit is significant as it comes against the backdrop of strained China-India relations since a deadly border clash in 2020.

The two leaders met last October in Russia, indicating an attempt to stabilize ties.

The SCO summit has become a crucial platform for China and Russia to enhance their influence in Central Asia.

Leaders from various countries are expected to engage in high-profile bilateral meetings during the summit, including Russian President Vladimir Putin's discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the Ukraine war and his meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian regarding Iran's nuclear program.

The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres also met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin to discuss multilateralism and reforms to the global financial system.

The summit is not only a diplomatic event but also serves as a stage for addressing critical international issues.

Bilateral diplomacy remains a key focus, with discussions on sensitive matters such as Iran's nuclear program and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Overall, Modi's visit reflects a cautious thaw in China-India relations and highlights the significance of diplomatic engagement within the context of multilateral organizations like the SCO.

The summit underscores the global implications of these regional dynamics.
