Heavy Rains Kill at Least 22 in Nepal, Block Roads

Landslides and flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall have killed at least 22 people and blocked numerous roads in Nepal over the past 36 hours.
Kathmandu: Heavy rains that began 36 hours ago have resulted in significant loss of life and disruption across Nepal.

According to officials, the adverse weather has caused landslides and flash floods, blocking roads, destroying bridges, and claiming at least 22 lives.

The majority of these fatalities occurred in the Ilam district, located in the eastern part of the country along the border with India, where 18 deaths were reported due to separate landslides.

Three additional casualties were attributed to lightning strikes in southern Nepal, while one individual lost their life in Udayapur district due to flooding conditions.

Emergency services are currently engaged in rescue operations for the 11 individuals who have gone missing since Saturday.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) spokesperson, Shanti Mahat, confirmed these efforts.

Numerous highways have been rendered impassable due to landslides and floodwaters, stranding hundreds of travelers.

Despite these disruptions, Rinji Sherpa, a representative for Kathmandu airport, stated that international flights continue to operate normally.

In the southeastern region, the Koshi River has risen above dangerous levels, posing a significant risk similar to its annual impact on the neighboring Indian state of Bihar.

To alleviate the pressure, all 56 sluice gates at the Koshi Barrage have been opened, a measure usually reserved for exceptional conditions.

The district governor of Sunsari, Dharmendra Kumar Mishra, warned that water flow exceeds double the normal level.

The capital city of Kathmandu has seen its roadways and residential areas inundated by flooding, effectively isolating it from the rest of the country via land routes.

Each year, the monsoon season, which typically runs from mid-June to mid-September, leads to numerous landslide and flash flood incidents in Nepal, resulting in significant loss of life.

Weather forecasts indicate that heavy rains will persist until Monday, prompting authorities to take urgent measures to mitigate the disaster's impact on affected communities.
