Heavy Rain in Northern China Raises Flood Death Toll to 13
Five people remain missing as authorities brace for continued rain.
In northern China, the death toll from recent floods has risen to 13 following heavy rainfall.
State media reported that three additional fatalities occurred due to the downpours in the region.
The Inner Mongolia city of Ordos retrieved three bodies from floodwaters, and three individuals are currently missing near the banks of the Yellow River.
Forecasters predict continued rain over the coming days, with one recent storm dumping more than 204 mm (8 inches) of precipitation on a single district within a 24-hour period—a sum exceeding double the average monthly rainfall for August.
Additionally, flash floods have already claimed at least 10 lives in grassland regions close to major cities such as Bayannur and Ordos, displacing communities and straining local emergency services.
As meteorologists link these extreme weather conditions to climate change, authorities are challenged with protecting vulnerable areas from further flooding while ensuring the safety of remaining residents.
