Guterres Praises China's Support for Multilateralism
The UN Secretary-General commends China's role in upholding multilateralism at a meeting in Tianjin.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has emphasized the importance of China's support for multilateralism, praising the country's commitment to international cooperation.
During a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin, Guterres highlighted that China plays a crucial role as a 'fundamental pillar' in the multilateral system.
Guterres expressed his gratitude for China's contributions and stressed the significance of maintaining stability and certainty in international affairs.
He also acknowledged concerns over new forms of policy approaches that may undermine diplomatic efforts and blur the lines between business and politics.
In response, President Xi reaffirmed China's commitment to deepen its cooperation with the UN, supporting its central role in global affairs and working together to maintain world peace, promote development, and foster prosperity.
This meeting reflects a growing alignment between China and the Global South as leaders from Russia, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East gather to strengthen their collective influence on the international stage.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization, established in 2001, aims to develop a positive comprehensive global political and economic order based on mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, and mutually beneficial cooperation.
