Global Headlines: Tunisian Candidate's Prison Sentence, Ghana's Presidential Race, Kenyan Abductions, Saudi Tech Innovations, and Hezbollah's Explosives Condemnation

Tunisia's presidential candidate Ayachi Zammel sentenced to 20 months for fraud, claims charges are political. Ghana approves 13 candidates, including VP Mahamudu Bawumia and ex-President John Mahama, for the 2024 presidential race.
Presidential candidate Ayachi Zammel has been sentenced to 20 months in prison on fraud charges, which his attorney claims are politically motivated. Interestingly, this sentencing comes at a time when Tunisia is gearing up for the October 6 election, with Zammel planning to campaign from behind bars amidst several other legal battles.

Speaking of elections, Ghana's Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and former President John Dramani Mahama are among the 13 candidates approved for the 2024 presidential race. These two candidates, leading their respective parties, will face off on December 7, alongside other notable figures like Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, running as an independent, and newcomer Nana Kwame Bediako.

Meanwhile, in Kenya, three men who were abducted following anti-government protests in Kitengela have been released after being detained by security forces. This incident has sparked a further investigation by the Independent Police Oversight Authority into allegations of unlawful arrests and abductions linked to the ongoing unrest.

Turning to innovations, Green Desert Tech, founded by Saudi chemist Abdulmajeed Hashem, is revolutionizing algae cultivation in the desert using advanced sensor technology. This Jeddah-based startup emphasizes the environmental benefits of algae, aiming to provide sustainable solutions in food, biofuel, and carbon dioxide absorption.

In another part of the world, the UN has condemned Hezbollah for using handheld communication devices as explosives in Lebanon, causing 37 deaths and over 3,000 injuries. The situation has heightened concerns of escalating violence, with the UN calling for an independent investigation to prevent further conflicts.

Finally, in connection with Hezbollah, Mohammad Ibrahim Bazzi, a former Lebanese diplomat, has pleaded guilty to evading US sanctions through a financing scheme for the group. Bazzi now faces up to 20 years in prison and significant financial forfeitures, highlighting the international efforts to crack down on violations of financial sanctions.
