France Offers Assistance to Enhance Food Distribution Safety in Gaza
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot indicates willingness for Europe to support the secure handling of food supplies in Gaza, amid growing concerns over civilian casualties.
In response to escalating criticism and the mounting death toll at Israeli-backed food distribution centers in Gaza, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot has announced that France is prepared, along with other European nations, to contribute to ensuring the safety of such operations within the Palestinian territory.
This initiative aims to address concerns held by Israel regarding the potential diversion of aid to armed groups like Hamas.
The minister expressed outrage over the recent loss of 500 lives in Gaza while seeking humanitarian aid, a figure corroborated by the health ministry controlled by Hamas, which has reported that more than 500 individuals have been killed near aid centers since late May. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu countered allegations from left-leaning daily Haaretz, labeling them as a 'blood libel,' after it was reported that military commanders instructed soldiers to fire at Palestinians attempting to access humanitarian aid in Gaza.
Meanwhile, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) condemned the current food distribution effort supported by Israel and the United States in Gaza, terming it 'slaughter masquerading as humanitarian aid.' The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, also chimed in, emphasizing that individuals in Gaza seeking sustenance should not face a 'death sentence'.
This ongoing crisis highlights the complex dynamics between Israel, Hamas, and international organizations, with each side presenting its concerns and reactions to the deteriorating situation in Gaza.
