Artificial Intelligence to Identify Floating Plastic Waste in Oceans Through Satellite Imagery Analysis

Each year, the world consumes staggering amounts of plastic, ranging between 350 and 460 million metric tons according to some studies. Data indicate that global plastic production has more than doubled in the past two decades, and it is expected to nearly triple by 2060 if current trends continue. Observers warn that this rapid increase in plastic consumption poses a significant threat to the environment and human health. Amid these concerns, a glimmer of hope shines on the horizon with the convergence of advanced technology and conscious environmental oversight.
The Role of Artificial Intelligence
A team of researchers from EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) and Wageningen University has embarked on a pioneering mission to combat this crisis. In a groundbreaking study recently published in the journal Cell iScience, a model of artificial intelligence was unveiled that could change the game by pinpointing floating plastic materials in satellite images with unprecedented precision. This leap in AI capabilities could aid in systematically cleaning oceans, seas, and even rivers of plastic waste using specialized vessels.

Potential of Satellite Imagery
Satellite images captured by Sentinel-2, part of the European Space Agency, cover coastal regions around the world every two to five days. These massive data sets, reaching terabytes in size, require automatic analysis, a feat made possible through AI models. In collaboration with ocean scientists and remote sensing specialists, the research team cultivated a database featuring thousands of instances of marine debris in satellite images from all over the world. These examples served as the foundation for training their artificial intelligence model to recognize plastic debris, an approach akin to teaching it how to "see" the problem.

This innovative method merges data-focused AI principles with computer vision algorithms that incorporate expert manual annotations of the precise debris visible in images.

Anticipated Outcomes
Researchers aspire to a robust model for detecting marine debris that estimates the likelihood of debris presence for each pixel in Sentinel-2 satellite images. This model surpasses previous methods by leveraging an advanced training approach that enhances predictive accuracy. Even in challenging climate conditions like cloud cover and atmospheric haze, the detector maintains its accuracy, a significant achievement that ensures the identification of plastic debris even under adverse conditions.

Addressing Plastic Debris
The precise detection of plastic materials amid marine debris is of colossal importance, especially since plastic often finds its way into open waters following rainfall and flooding, creating an urgent need for reliable detection methods. A stark example is the aftermath of floods that struck Durban, South Africa, on April 11, 2022, resulting in nearly 400 fatalities and significant damage to homes and businesses. Torrential rains caused rivers to overflow, carrying unprecedented amounts of trash into the city's port, and consequently into the open Indian Ocean.

In satellite imagery, distinguishing these floating objects amid clouds using traditional channels of red, green, and blue can be challenging. However, by switching to alternate spectral channels, including near-infrared light, it becomes possible to discern them.

Besides improving predictions of marine debris, this AI detection model is also enhancing its capabilities to include PlanetScope images acquired from nanosatellite cubesats. Integrating weekly Sentinel-2 data with PlanetScope's daily acquisitions promises to bridge the gap toward continuous daily monitoring. The dual perspective offered by PlanetScope and Sentinel-2, capturing the same marine debris at roughly the same time from different locations, provides valuable insights into drift patterns affected by winds and ocean currents.

Leading towards a Cleaner Future

The journey doesn't stop here. Professor Marc Rossouw, in collaboration with Professor Tim van Emmerik and partners from the Ocean Cleanup organization in the Netherlands, are set to explore further possibilities. They all aim to enhance the tracking of marine debris through continuous satellite imagery. This endeavor stems from the artificial intelligence project for detecting plastic materials conducted in cooperation with the Swiss Data Science Center, a joint initiative between ETH Zurich and EPFL. By combining technological prowess with environmental awareness, we move closer to cleaner oceans and a healthier planet.
