Estonia's Readiness to Host Nuclear-Capable NATO Jets Sparks Concern from Kremlin
The Kremlin expresses concern over Estonia's preparedness to host U.S.-made F-35A stealth jets, capable of carrying nuclear weapons.
MOSCOW: The Kremlin has voiced its concerns regarding Estonia's stated readiness to host NATO allies' U.S.-made F-35A stealth jets, which possess the capability to carry nuclear weapons.
According to sources, Estonian Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur recently stated that Estonia is prepared to serve as a base for these nuclear-capable aircraft if necessary.
This announcement comes in the wake of Britain's decision to purchase at least 12 F-35A jets capable of carrying nuclear warheads, which will be integrated into NATO's airborne nuclear mission. The Kremlin's spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, emphasized that such a move by Estonia would indeed pose an immediate threat to Russia.
He further highlighted the absurdity of certain political statements made in the Baltic region, comprising Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
Peskov also remarked on the deteriorated state of relations between Russia and these Baltic republics. This recent development adds another layer of tension to the already strained relationship between Russia and its NATO neighbors.
As discussions around military capabilities and nuclear deterrents continue to unfold, it remains to be seen how this latest escalation will impact regional stability.
