Danish PM: Netanyahu Has Become 'Problem' as Pressure Builds on Israel over Gaza War
Frederiksen says her country, currently holding the EU presidency, will seek to increase pressure on Israel.
COPENHAGEN: Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated on Saturday that Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu has become a 'problem,' and she plans to intensify pressure on Israel due to its actions during the Gaza war.
Denmark currently holds the presidency of the European Union.
Frederiksen criticized the 'absolutely appalling and catastrophic' humanitarian situation in Gaza and the new settlement project in the occupied West Bank, asserting that her government wants to escalate international pressure on Israel but has not yet secured support from other EU member states.
She suggested considering political pressure, sanctions against settlers or Israeli ministers, and even potential broader economic or research-based sanctions.
Frederiksen emphasized that no options are off the table, drawing a parallel with how sanctions were designed for Russia.
Denmark has not announced its intention to recognize the Palestinian state.
The conflict began on October 7, 2023, with Hamas launching an attack on Israel resulting in over 1,200 deaths, mainly civilians, according to official figures.
In response, Israel's military operations have led to the loss of more than 61,430 Palestinians, predominantly civilians, as reported by Gaza's health ministry and deemed reliable by the United Nations.
