UK Urged to Expedite Medical Evacuation of Gaza's Sick and Injured Children
A group of 96 UK parliamentarians has called for urgent action to bring sick and injured Palestinian children from Gaza to the UK, emphasizing that such evacuations should occur without delay.
The British government is under mounting pressure to expedite the evacuation of sick and injured Palestinian children from Gaza.
A letter signed by 96 cross-party members of parliament urges senior government ministers to prioritize this issue due to the immediate risk of death faced by these children in the healthcare crisis gripping the Palestinian enclave.
According to UNICEF, over 50,000 Palestinian children have been killed or injured since the onset of the recent Gaza conflict.
The letter, coordinated by Dr. Simon Opher, a Labour MP and GP, highlights the 'horrific proportions' of medical and humanitarian conditions in Gaza.
Signatories are working with Medecins sans Frontieres (MSF) to facilitate the evacuation process.
They also call for asylum options after treatment is completed, criticizing previous Home Office decisions regarding biometric checks on these children and their caregivers.
The government has stated plans to evacuate children at 'pace' and has committed funding for medical treatment in the Middle East since late 2023.
Supporters of the initiative are advocating for a dedicated, publicly funded pathway that prioritizes clinical need over bureaucratic hurdles.
