Cargo Ship Collides with Baltimore Bridge, Six Missing: Search and Rescue Transitioning to Recovery

Cargo Ship Collides with Baltimore Bridge, Six Missing: Search and Rescue Transitioning to Recovery

A cargo ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday, causing it to collapse and blocking the busy US commercial harbor.
Six members of a nighttime construction crew who were repairing potholes on the bridge went missing in the incident.

After extensive search efforts, US Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath announced that they do not believe anyone will be found alive due to the water temperature and length of time since the incident.

Maryland's secretary of state police, Roland Butler, confirmed that the search and rescue operation is transitioning to a recovery operation.

Boats will continue patrolling overnight.

A container ship collided with a bridge support, causing the 1977-built steel structure to collapse.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore praised quick thinking by authorities for preventing vehicles from accessing the bridge before the collapse.

The incident is currently being investigated as an accident, with no known connection to terrorism.

Maryland transportation chief Paul Wiedefeld stated that bridge repairs were unrelated to the collapse.

President Joe Biden called the accident terrible and pledged to reopen the port and rebuild the bridge.

Governor Moore of the Democratic party expressed focus on helping families of the victims find closure after a shipping vessel, the Dali, collided with a bridge in Baltimore, resulting in multiple fatalities.

Two of the victims were identified as being from Guatemala, while local news reported victims from Mexico, El Salvador, and Honduras.

The ship, flagged in Singapore, had experienced a momentary loss of propulsion before the collision.

Witnesses described seeing steel girders and mangled metal in the Patapsco River.

A local teacher, Tiffany Wengert, expressed shock at the sudden disaster.

The ship, managed by Synergy Marine Pte Ltd, reportedly dropped anchors as a last attempt to prevent it from drifting into the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Six people are missing and federal investigators expect recordings from the vessel to help determine the cause of the incident.

Divers will begin a more detailed search for the missing people on Wednesday.

The bridge, an important link in the East Coast highway system, is blocked by a tangled steel barrier, halting almost all maritime traffic.

The Port of Baltimore is one of the busiest major US ports with over 15,000 jobs directly related to it, supporting approximately 140,000 more.

It ranks ninth in terms of foreign cargo handled and value.

The port was closed due to a bridge collapse, causing significant disruption to supply chains.

US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg warned of the major and prolonged impact on supply chains, while Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott described the incident as a tragic and unexpected event.
