Building Collapse in Karachi Leaves 27 Dead as Rescue Operation Concludes
Rescue efforts at the site of a collapsed building in Pakistan's megacity, Karachi, have been completed after recovering all bodies; 20 victims identified as members of the minority Hindu community.
The rescue operation at the site of a collapsed building in Karachi, Pakistan, has come to an end following the recovery of all 27 bodies.
The apartment block collapse occurred on Friday morning in the city's Lyari neighborhood, which was previously notorious for gang violence and crime.
Residents reported hearing strange cracking sounds just before the building caved in.
Authorities had previously declared the building unsafe and issued eviction notices between 2022 and 2024; however, it is claimed that these warnings were not received by all residents or landlords.
The majority of those killed were from poor families, with 20 victims identified as members of Pakistan's Hindu minority community.
Since Saturday, efforts have been made to evacuate other buildings deemed structurally dangerous in the district.
This incident has brought attention to the widespread issue of poor construction standards and building collapses in Pakistan, a problem exacerbated by rapid urbanization and lax enforcement of safety codes.
