SANTIAGO — The saga of an American teenager's ambitious flying project has taken an unexpected turn with the detention of 19-year-old Ethan Guo on an Antarctic island.
Guo's quest to fly a small plane to every continent, a journey followed by over a million online supporters, encountered significant delays after Chilean authorities took him into custody following his unauthorized landing on King George Island.Guo's deviation from his submitted flight plan activated alert protocols, according to Chile's General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics.
He was initially detained upon landing on July temperatures on King George Island, which is home to various international research stations and claimed by Chile.
Guo had allegedly planned to fly over Punta Arenas but not beyond it.
