What to Know About the Iranian Nuclear Sites Trump Says Were Hit by US Strikes

President Donald Trump has announced that the United States has attacked three key Iranian nuclear and military sites, escalating tensions between Iran and Israel.
Dubai, United Arab Emirates: President Donald Trump has confirmed that US forces have launched strikes against three prominent Iranian nuclear and military facilities.

The targeted locations include the Natanz enrichment facility, the Fordo enrichment site, and the Isfahan Nuclear Technology Center.

According to Trump's account, these strikes were 'very successful,' with Fordo serving as the primary objective. The attacks took place early on Sunday morning, with confirmation provided by Iran's state-run IRNA news agency.

The agency cited sources indicating that there had been incidents around both Isfahan and Natanz, although no further details were immediately available.

An official from Isfahan confirmed that an assault was carried out against the underground Fordo nuclear site. This recent escalation comes amid ongoing tensions between Iran and Israel, which have seen a series of retaliatory strikes and military exchanges over recent weeks.

Israeli authorities have emphasized that these actions were necessary to prevent what they perceive as an imminent threat from Iran's nuclear program.

In response, Iran has engaged in a series of missile and drone attacks on Israeli territory. The United States and Iran had been engaging in diplomatic talks that could have led to the lifting of some economic sanctions imposed by Washington on Tehran.

Until Saturday, the US had played a role in intercepting Iranian strikes targeting Israel but refrained from launching direct assaults on Iranian soil until now.A closer examination of the targeted sites reveals their significance within Iran's nuclear infrastructure:Natanz Enrichment Facility:Located approximately 220 kilometers southeast of Tehran, Natanz serves as Iran's primary uranium enrichment site.

The facility was previously attacked by Israeli forces, resulting in damage to both above-ground and underground structures.

Although not explicitly mentioned, Natanz operates various centrifuges for enriching uranium, with some reports suggesting that most or all were destroyed during the Israeli strikes.Fordo Enrichment Facility:Situated around 100 kilometers southwest of Tehran, Fordo is designed to withstand airstrikes due to its burial beneath a mountain and protected by anti-aircraft batteries.

The site primarily focuses on processing uranium into enriched form, employing centrifuges in cascades for this purpose.

Given the facility's deep underground location, it could only be effectively targeted with specialized 'bunker buster' bombs, such as the GBU-57 A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator.Isfahan Nuclear Technology Center:Located approximately 350 kilometers southeast of Tehran, Isfahan hosts a large number of nuclear scientists and is home to three Chinese research reactors.

Although Israeli forces have previously targeted specific buildings within the facility, including a uranium conversion center, there has been no reported increase in radiation levels according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).Other Nuclear Sites:Apart from these facilities, Iran operates several other sites within its nuclear program that have not yet been announced as targets of US strikes.

These include the Bushehr commercial nuclear power plant and the Arak heavy water reactor, among others. The current situation highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding Iran's nuclear ambitions and its implications for regional security.

As diplomatic negotiations continue to be overshadowed by military actions, it remains uncertain what future developments may arise from this escalating conflict.
