US Urges Citizens to Leave Lebanon Amid Escalating Hezbollah-Israel Conflict and Explosions in Beirut

US advises immediate departure from Lebanon amid rising Hezbollah-Israel tensions and security concerns.
The US State Department has issued a travel advisory urging Americans to leave Lebanon immediately due to the escalating conflict between Hezbollah and Israel and recent explosions in Beirut. With reduced capacity for commercial flights, the advisory underscores the deteriorating security situation, especially near the Syrian border and in refugee settlements, following the cross-border attack by Hamas last October.

Meanwhile, an Iran-backed Iraqi militia named the Islamic Resistance in Iraq has claimed responsibility for drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, affecting both northern and southern regions. The Israeli Army Radio reported that three drones launched from Iraq were intercepted near the Israel-occupied Syrian Golan Heights, in response to Israeli actions in Gaza that have led to approximately 41,400 deaths post the Hamas attack.

Turning to Iran, a tragic coal mine explosion in Tabas, Khorasan province, has claimed the lives of 51 workers due to a rapid release of methane and carbon monoxide. With around 70 workers present during the incident, rescue operations faced significant challenges, prompting Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to call for a thorough safety investigation in the mining sector.

In other news, Sri Lanka is experiencing a historic runoff in its presidential election as no candidate managed to secure more than 50% of the vote in the first round. Leftist politician Anura Kumara Dissanayake currently leads, followed by opposition leader Sajith Premadasa and incumbent president Ranil Wickremesinghe, with the new president expected to tackle severe economic challenges amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic and past policy errors.

Closer to home, a mass shooting in Birmingham, Alabama’s Five Points South area late Saturday resulted in four deaths and 18 injuries. Multiple shooters targeted a group, killing two men and one woman on the scene with a fourth man succumbing to injuries at the hospital, as authorities investigate the incident, which they do not believe to be random, but have yet to make any arrests.

On a sporting note, after a 3-1 victory over Al Ittihad in the Saudi Clasico, Portuguese coach Jorge Jesús highlighted Al Hilal's ambitions, with the team now topping the Saudi Pro League. Jesús stressed the need for a consistent home ground as they currently await the Kingdom Arena's readiness and praised both teams' performances, with aims for success in the cup, league, World Cup, and continental finals.
