Twitter 'constantly reviews' accounts, trends with regards to evolving situation in Egypt: Twitter tells Youm7
Privately-owned Egyptian newspaper Youm7 reported on Saturday that it has received a statement from Twitter saying that the company "constantly reviews account activity, trends and behaviours with regards to the evolving situation in Egypt."
"Twitter is an open public service and we enforce our rules impartially regardless of political affiliation... Unwanted behaviour, terrorist organisations and violent extremist groups have no place on our service, and making threats or promoting terrorism is against our rules," Youm7 quoted Twitter as saying.
Youm7 said that the US social media platform sent the statement to clarify its stance regarding “abusive accounts” that target Egypt, as well as to respond to a campaign launched by Youm7 condemning Twitter for allowing accounts on its platform that incite violence against the state.
Youm7 said that the campaign "resonated widely with many patriots defending the dignity of their country," and that some people have requested that Twitter be banned in Egypt.
In its statement to Youm7, Twitter said that "we work closely with the government and civil society to address emerging issues and challenges in Egypt... and we take action against accounts that violate our policies."
“We urge everyone to report any behaviour that they think violates the rules of the platform through our reporting tools,” Twitter said.
"In the latest Global Transparency Report, we took action against more than 86,000 accounts under our Terrorism and Violent Extremism Policy during the second half of 2019," the company said.
