Turkiye and UAE Strengthen Clean Energy Ties with $1bn Solar Project

Turkiye and UAE Strengthen Clean Energy Ties with $1bn Solar Project

The two nations advance their partnership in renewable energy, underscoring regional cooperation on climate goals.
Turkiye and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are enhancing their commitment to clean energy by embarking on a substantial solar power project.

A $1 billion initiative for a solar power plant in Nigde Bor marks a significant step forward in their strategic collaboration, as stated by Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar.

This move is part of a series of agreements that include a $27 billion framework signed in 2023 and a memorandum of understanding between Abu Dhabi's Masdar and Turkiye's Ministry of Energy.

These deals reflect the shared vision of both countries for sustainable energy development, technology transfer, and long-term climate goals.

Bayraktar disclosed on social media platform X that discussions with CEO of UAE-based energy company Masdar, Mr. Mohamed Jameel Al-Ramahi, focused on various cooperation opportunities.

Key areas of investment include solar energy, onshore and offshore wind projects, pumped-storage hydroelectricity, and technology transfer.

Bayraktar also announced that the partners have reached the final stages of an approximately $1 billion investment in a 1,100 MW solar power plant project in Nigde Bor.

The discussions considered potential investments in an offshore wind power plant, HVDC transmission line, and pumped-storage hydroelectric plant.

The minister emphasized Turkiye's aim to strengthen its strategic energy partnership with the UAE through intergovernmental collaboration on renewable projects.

He stated that these collaborations are intended to enhance infrastructure, achieve the 2053 net-zero target, and establish a transformative model in the region.

Turkiye's state-run Anadolu Agency reported on the discussions between the two countries, noting their consideration of investment opportunities across solar, wind, and hydroelectric energy sectors, as well as initiatives for technology transfer.

This development aligns with Turkiye’s broader Energy Transition Strategy, which aims to ensure energy security, reduce dependence on imports, and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2053.

The strategy plans to expand the nation's capacity in wind and solar power from 30 gigawatts to 120 GW by 2035, a fourfold increase requiring investments of approximately $108 billion.

Turkiye is actively promoting solar technologies for industrial, residential, and agricultural use.

With advancements in photovoltaic modules and large-scale solar installations, the country is positioning solar energy as an economically viable and scalable component of its clean energy transformation.
