President Donald Trump says he is now focused on ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict and is considering providing Kyiv with long-range weaponry.
With a fragile Israel-Hamas ceasefire in place, President
Donald Trump has turned his attention to ending Russia's war on Ukraine.
In a recent speech, Trump expressed confidence that progress can be made in this area due to recent developments in the Middle East.
He also signaled that he is prepared to step up pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin if necessary.
Trump plans to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for talks this Friday, their fourth face-to-face meeting this year.
During these discussions, Trump has mentioned the possibility of selling Kyiv long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles, which would enable Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory and put pressure on Putin to engage in peace talks.
While providing Ukraine with Tomahawks would be a significant move, some analysts suggest that shorter-range missile systems such as the Extended Range Attack Munition (ERAM) and Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) may be more effective in the near term.
These missiles have ranges of approximately 285 miles and 186 miles respectively, compared to the Tomahawk's range of around 995 miles.
Trump has shown interest in new sanctions against Russia, particularly from Congress, which has proposed legislation imposing steep tariffs on countries purchasing Russian oil, gas, uranium, and other exports.
The White House has engaged in discussions regarding this legislation, indicating a growing willingness to consider further economic penalties against Moscow.
Overall, Trump's focus on ending the conflicts in both Ukraine and Gaza is central to his 2024 reelection pitch.
As he continues to press Putin for direct talks with Zelensky, it remains to be seen whether he will ultimately succeed in bringing an end to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
