The Threads of Life: Syrian Artist Hayat Saker's Solo Show Explores Personal Narratives through Stitching and Acrylic Paintings

Syrian artist Hayat Saker presents her second solo exhibition, 'Untitled,' at the Saudi Arabian Society for Culture and Arts in Dammam, showcasing her unique mixed-media works that blend traditional techniques with personal symbolism.
DAMMAM: In a deeply personal display of creativity, Syrian artist Hayat Saker’s latest solo show, "Untitled," currently on view at the Saudi Arabian Society for Culture and Arts in Dammam, presents an intimate exploration of life, memory, and emotion through her distinctive art form.

Combining traditional stitching techniques with bold acrylic paintings, Saker weaves intricate narratives that are as much about her experiences as they are open to interpretation by the viewer.Saker’s journey through this exhibition is marked by both personal trials and triumphs.

Just five months before the show, she survived a car accident that left her hands broken.

Despite this setback, her resilience shines through in every thread carefully stitched into her pieces.

The run-up to the exhibition required patience and perseverance as Saker slowly recovered, allowing the show to be postponed until she could resume her creative process. Each of the 41 mixed-media works on display reflects Saker’s signature style—acrylic paint combined with threads that burst forth from the canvas in a dance of controlled chaos.

Some pieces were created in Damascus before being shipped to Saudi Arabia, while others were crafted during her two-year stay in Dammam.

This geographical divide does not affect the cohesion of the exhibition; instead, it serves as a testament to Saker’s ability to find peace and inspiration regardless of location. The works, untitled by design, invite viewers to connect with them on a deeply personal level.

Emar, one of Saker’s twin daughters and also an artist herself, describes her mother's art as reflecting the messy yet patterned beauty of life.

Her brother Rami shares stories of growing up surrounded by his mother’s creativity, noting how it shaped not only their family’s artistic expressions but also their views on art itself. For the children who visit the exhibition, Saker’s works offer an educational experience.

Emar emphasizes the importance of training young eyes to appreciate and understand diverse forms of art.

This focus on education reflects Saker’s broader impact; her technique is rare and contemporary, with only three other women worldwide adopting it as their primary artistic form.Nedal Al-Hmeidi, Saker’s husband, and their children were present at the opening night, highlighting the family's support system that has been integral to Saker’s artistic journey.

The exhibition is more than just a display of art; it is a celebration of resilience, personal expression, and the interconnectedness of life’s narratives.'Untitled' remains on view at the Saudi Arabian Society for Culture and Arts in Dammam until Oct. 29, offering viewers an opportunity to engage with Saker's compelling exploration of life through threads and paint.
