Successful Surgical Separation of Conjoined Twins in Saudi Arabia

The surgical separation of conjoined twins Hawa and Khadija, who are from Burkina Faso, was successfully completed at King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City of the National Guard in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The procedure took place on [date], involving a comprehensive 26-member medical and surgical team led by Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, Supervisor General of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief).
This complex operation lasted six hours and was executed in five distinct phases.
Hawa and Khadija, who are 17 months old, were joined at the lower chest and abdomen, sharing the pericardium and liver.
According to Dr. Al-Rabeeah, the operation commenced smoothly, with the anesthesia phase being completed ahead of schedule.
Notably, the surgical team discovered that the twins did not share the intestines, a finding that contributed to a reduction in the planned operation duration.
Dr. Al-Rabeeah acknowledged the significant support from Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, emphasizing the Saudi Conjoined Twins Program's commitment to humanitarian medical initiatives.
He highlighted that this surgical success reflects the Kingdom's dedication to enhancing healthcare quality and efficiency, aligning with the objectives set forth in Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030.
The recent separation represents the 62nd such operation conducted by the Saudi Conjoined Twins Program, which has provided care to 146 conjoined twins from 27 different countries over the past 35 years.
The program's international standing has been recognized by the United Nations, which established November 24 as World Conjoined Twins Day to raise awareness about the condition.
Family members of the twins expressed their profound gratitude to the Saudi leadership for facilitating the specialized medical care that made this operation possible.
