Savoring the Sweet Traditions of Ramadan: Logaimat, Qatayef, Kunafa, and Dates

During Ramadan, Muslim families celebrate the end of their daily fasting with traditional desserts.
One such dessert is Logaimat, also known as lokma or loukoumades.

This sweet dumpling is made from deep-fried dough, soaked in honey, syrup, or molasses, and topped with sesame seeds or nuts.

The origin of Logaimat is unclear, with some believing it was first created in Baghdad as a payment for legal adjudicators, while others suggest it came from Greece via Alexandria.

Regardless of its origins, this crispy and sweet dessert is popular in many Middle Eastern and European countries.

Qatayef and Kunafa are popular Middle Eastern desserts.

Qatayef are pancakes filled with white cheese or nuts, which are then fried or baked and served with syrup or honey.

They are commonly enjoyed in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Levantine countries.

Kunafa, originating in the Levant during the Fatimid era, is made of spun pastry soaked in sugar syrup and layered with cream or cheese.

It can be served either hard, resulting in a crunchy texture from shredded phyllo dough, or soft.

Both desserts are best enjoyed warm and can be topped with cream, walnuts, or pistachios.

The text describes three Middle Eastern desserts: soft kunafa, honeycomb bread with cheese (Khailat nahal), and maqshush.

Soft kunafa is made of ground semolina dough and flavored with rose water and orange blossom.

It is served warm with crushed pistachios.

Khailat nahal is a Yemeni dessert consisting of bread stuffed with cheese and soaked in syrup.

It is typically enjoyed with a warm cup of black tea.

Maqshush is a traditional Saudi dessert made of buckwheat pan bites topped with ghee, honey, date molasses, or sugar.

It is often eaten when it is cold and rainy.

Dates are also mentioned as a symbol of Saudi Arabia and an essential part of the country's hospitality, often served with Arabic coffee.

During the holy month of Ramadan, dates are a traditional food for breaking the fast.

Muslims often consume three dates and a glass of water, following the example of Prophet Muhammad.

Dates offer various flavors, textures, colors, and sweetness levels, making them versatile for desserts such as date cookies (mammoul) and sticky date pudding.

Additionally, dates are used to stuff dry fruits, pistachios, walnuts, almonds, and even coated with chocolate for sweet treats.

With over 200 varieties, dates provide numerous options for iftar celebrations.
