Saudi Sustainable Building Demand Triples Amid Growing Eco-friendly Development Focus
The demand for environmental performance assessments under Saudi Arabia's Sustainable Building program has tripled over the past five years.
JEDDAH: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is witnessing a significant surge in demand for environmental performance assessments under its Sustainable Building program, with the figure tripling over the past five years.
This growth underscores the nation's escalating commitment to eco-friendly development within its rapidly expanding construction sector. The increase in demand follows enhancements to the ready-built property inspection service, which allows developers to submit detailed inspection requests for villa compounds and apartment buildings through a digital platform.
The automation of service procedures and improved accessibility have contributed to this surge, as per a recent report from the Saudi Press Agency, based on an official press release. As part of its Vision 2030 strategy, Saudi Arabia is intensifying efforts to make its construction sector more sustainable and environmentally responsible.
This move aligns with the nation's broader goal of balancing economic growth and environmental stewardship.Developed by the Ministry of Municipal, Rural Affairs, and Housing, the Mostadam program aims to promote sustainable building practices tailored to the Kingdom's unique climate and environmental conditions.
By improving energy, water, and resource efficiency, the program supports economic development and job creation while encouraging eco-friendly construction practices.Projects are evaluated based on their adherence to established sustainability criteria and awarded one of five ratings: Green, Silver, Gold, Diamond, or Diamond Plus.
The progress made in this area is reflected in the issuance of six sustainability assessment certificates during the first half of 2025, representing a 200% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
Additionally, the number of projects granted design conformity certificates rose by 93%, reaching a total of 29.The digital platform has issued over 6,000 reports since its inception in 2018, including property inspections and evaluations of construction quality.
The national program, in collaboration with the Real Estate General Authority, also announced that university students registered with the Saudi Council of Engineers are now eligible to participate in training programs offered by the Saudi Real Estate Institute.Furthermore, an initiative has been launched to support students by enhancing their professional readiness and empowering youth through skill development.
This is achieved by creating a 'Certified Engineer' account on the Mostadam platform, allowing participants to measure the sustainability of new and existing buildings comprehensively. The Sustainability Assessment system aligns with international best practices and the Saudi Building Code, providing owners and developers with a comprehensive rating system from design to maintenance.
The assessment standards have been tailored to suit the nation's unique climate and environmental conditions, focusing on energy efficiency, water usage, health, and quality of life, in line with Saudi Vision 2030 objectives.
