Saudi Arabia's New Sustainability Initiative: Saudi Green Initiative and Middle East Green Initiative - Raising Awareness, Promoting Community Involvement, and Transitioning to Renewable Energy

Saudi environmental expert Dr. Fahd Turkistani emphasizes the importance of raising community awareness about environmental balance to protect the world, preserve biodiversity, and promote sustainability.
He believes the Saudi Green Initiative Day, launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on March 27, 2021, will have a positive impact on the local environment, foster sustainability, educate the public, and promote community involvement.

The initiative will also benefit economic, health, and social sectors.

Additionally, the Middle East Green Initiative was launched on the same day to combat climate change within the region.

Sana Al-Shahri, the chairwoman of Raisa Environmental Services Co., highlighted the societal and environmental significance of Saudi Green Initiative Day.

This annual event demonstrates the Saudi leadership's dedication to making environmental decisions, promoting community involvement, and encouraging participation in eco-friendly initiatives.

Al-Shahri, a member of the Asharqia Chamber's environment committee, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about environmental issues, particularly among young people.

She also stressed the need to engage the private sector in environmental efforts, as laws alone are not enough to protect the environment.

Since the implementation of the Saudi Green Initiative, Al-Shahri has observed a decrease in the number of sandstorms, which previously occurred four to five times a year.

The Saudi Arabian official, Turkistani, announced the Saudi Green Initiative last year, aiming to improve city planning, build sustainable communities, promote public transportation, and encourage outdoor recreation.

The initiative also focuses on managing natural resources like water, soil, and forests, and educating the public about sustainable resource utilization and waste reduction.

The Saudi Green Initiative has a three-part strategy: reducing carbon emissions by 278 million tons annually by 2030 through increasing renewable energy to 50%.

The text outlines Saudi Arabia's new sustainability initiative, which includes three pillars.

The first pillar focuses on transitioning to renewable energy, increasing energy efficiency, and implementing carbon capture programs to reach net-zero emissions by 2060.

The second pillar involves planting 10 billion trees and rehabilitating 40 million hectares of land to enhance air quality and decrease dust storms.

Lastly, the third pillar aims to protect 30 percent of Saudi Arabia's land and marine areas by 2030, collaborating with global partners to preserve natural habitats.
