Saudi Arabia's Annual Saudi Green Initiative Day: Mobilizing Society for a Greener Future with SR705 Billion Investment in Renewable Energy and Afforestation

Saudi Arabia has declared March 27 as the annual Saudi Green Initiative Day to promote environmental sustainability and inspire action towards a greener future.
The day, which coincides with the launch of the Saudi Green Initiative in 2021, aims to mobilize collective efforts from all segments of society under the theme "For Our Today and Their Tomorrow: KSA Together for a Greener Future." Citizens and residents are encouraged to participate in sustainability efforts and share their pledges on social media using the hashtag #ForAGreenerSaudi.

The SGI website offers an information pack with a pledge postcard to help individuals contribute to Saudi Arabia's sustainability goals.

The first Saudi Green Initiative Day showcased over 80 initiatives from public and private sectors, totaling an investment of over SR705 billion in the green economy.

These initiatives are crucial for Saudi Arabia's green transition, supporting Vision 2030's objectives of improving quality of life and creating economic opportunities in emerging sectors.

The SGI's efforts have led to significant environmental restoration, biodiversity preservation, and combating desertification and dust storms.

Key accomplishments include connecting 2.8 GW of renewable energy to the national grid, enough to power over 520,000 homes, with more projects underway to expand this capacity.

Saudi Arabia is making significant strides towards its goal of generating half of its power from renewable resources by 2030.

This includes the construction of a new solar power plant.

Additionally, the country has planted over 49 million trees and rehabilitated 94,000 hectares of degraded land as part of a plan to plant 10 billion trees.

A sustainable afforestation roadmap was launched during the MENA Climate Week in Riyadh in October 2023.

Protected land and marine areas in Saudi Arabia now cover 18.1% of the land and 6.49% of the marine environments.

Endangered species, including over 1,660 animals and seven Arabian leopard cubs, have been successfully rewilded.

The Saudi Green Initiative, launched by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed Bin Salman on March 27, 2021, is a comprehensive framework to strengthen Saudi Arabia's sustainability efforts as part of Vision 2030.

This initiative demonstrates the country's commitment to addressing climate change, promoting sustainable innovation, and preserving natural heritage for future generations.
