Saudi Arabia Orders Leonardo C-27J Aircraft in Maritime Patrol Configuration
Kingdom strengthens coastal surveillance and maritime security capabilities with specialised variant of Italian-built transport aircraft
Saudi Arabia has placed an order for Leonardo’s C-27J Spartan aircraft configured for maritime patrol missions, marking a significant step in enhancing the kingdom’s coastal surveillance and maritime security capabilities.
The acquisition introduces a specialised version of the twin-engine turboprop aircraft equipped with advanced sensors, mission systems and communication suites tailored for maritime domain awareness.
The maritime patrol configuration is designed to support tasks including coastal surveillance, search and rescue coordination, anti-smuggling operations and the monitoring of strategic sea lanes.
The C-27J platform, already in service with multiple air forces worldwide, is valued for its short take-off and landing performance, operational flexibility and ability to operate from austere runways.
In its maritime patrol role, the aircraft can be fitted with surface search radar, electro-optical systems and mission management software that enable crews to detect, track and coordinate responses to activity across territorial waters and exclusive economic zones.
Saudi Arabia’s extensive coastline along the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf places maritime security at the centre of its national defence strategy.
The kingdom has in recent years invested in naval modernisation, coastal defence systems and aerial surveillance assets to safeguard shipping routes, energy infrastructure and commercial ports.
The order forms part of broader defence cooperation between Riyadh and European aerospace manufacturers, reflecting ongoing efforts to diversify equipment sources while expanding domestic capabilities.
Industry observers note that maritime patrol aircraft play a growing role in countering illicit trafficking, piracy and asymmetric maritime threats in strategically sensitive waters.
Deliveries are expected to proceed under a structured production and integration schedule, with training and support arrangements accompanying the aircraft.
Once operational, the fleet is anticipated to strengthen Saudi Arabia’s ability to conduct sustained maritime monitoring and rapid response missions across its coastal regions.
