Saudi Arabia Implements Drone Surveillance to Protect Its Coastal Areas
The Kingdom utilizes advanced technology for real-time monitoring of marine resources and enforcement of environmental rules.
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia - The National Center for Environmental Compliance (NCEC) of Saudi Arabia has initiated a comprehensive drone program aimed at safeguarding the country's extensive coastal regions.
Spanning an impressive total length of 2,480 kilometers, these coastlines are vital to both the environment and the economy.
The initiative, launched in collaboration with Marine Operations for Environmental Services, is designed to bolster environmental protection efforts through cutting-edge surveillance technology. The drones deployed under this program are equipped to transmit live video feeds, facilitating immediate analysis by specialists on the ground.
This capability enables swift detection of activities that could potentially harm Saudi Arabia's marine resources and ecosystems.
The Red Sea coastline alone extends for 1,830 kilometers along the western edge of the country, showcasing the significance of these monitoring efforts.According to Amer Bamoneef, director-general for network monitoring at the NCEC, each drone is capable of operating for up to 55 minutes per sortie, covering a substantial area of 20 kilometers.
The data collected during these operations is transmitted in real-time to central control rooms, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of environmental monitoring and enforcement activities. The introduction of drones into Saudi Arabia's coastal surveillance system marks a significant step forward in the fight against marine pollution and resource depletion.
By expediting response times, these aerial technologies empower teams to quickly investigate potential pollution sources and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
This initiative not only underscores the importance of protecting the country's natural assets but also exemplifies Saudi Arabia's commitment to leveraging advanced technology for sustainable development.
