US President Donald Trump suggests the alleged Russian drone incursion into Polish airspace could have been unintentional.
Washington, DC – US President
Donald Trump stated on Thursday that the reported incursion of Russian drones into neighboring Poland may have occurred by 'mistake.'
Trump's statement, which seemed to offer an excuse for Russia, came in response to an ambiguous initial reaction from Moscow regarding the provocative act, causing concern among NATO allies in Europe.
Reacting nearly a day after Poland announced that several Russian drones entered its territory over multiple hours and were subsequently shot down with assistance from NATO allies, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform: 'What's with Russia violating Poland’s airspace with drones?
Here we go!'
Trump's comment stood in contrast to the strong condemnations issued by various European leaders and was notably less forceful than that of his ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker.
Whitaker tweeted, 'We stand by our @NAT Allisones in the face of these airspace violations and will defend every inch of NATO territory.'
The incursion occurred at a time when Trump is attempting to persuade Russian President Vladimir Putin to engage in direct peace talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to end Russia's ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has lasted for over three years.
