Romania to buy Israeli air defense systems for nearly $2.3 billion
The NATO member and Ukraine neighbor plans to bolster its defense posture with the acquisition of six anti-aircraft systems from Israel.
Romania has signed a deal with an Israeli company to purchase six integrated Shorad-Vshorad anti-aircraft systems, valued at over two billion euros ($2.3 billion).
This move aims to enhance Romania's defensive capabilities, particularly in light of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which has significantly increased the country's strategic importance and exposure to defense risks.
The agreement with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems includes a seven-year framework, under which additional contracts will be signed.
The procurement was initially approved by Romania's parliament in 2020 and is designed to provide protection against air threats, including drones and cruise missiles.
Additionally, Romania has recently entered into agreements for the acquisition of advanced military equipment, such as the purchase of 32 F-35 fighter jets from the United States in 2024, valued at an estimated $6.5 billion.
These efforts reflect Romania's ongoing strategy to modernize its defense forces and replace outdated Soviet-era weaponry.
