Red Sea Global Launches First Mangrove Nursery in Saudi Arabia to Plant 50 Million Trees by 2030
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia's environmental protection efforts have received a boost with the launch of Red Sea Global's first mangrove nursery.
The nursery, which was launched in partnership with the National Center for Vegetation Cover, aims to plant 50 million trees by 2030.
The move comes as the Kingdom is on a path of economic diversification and is spearheading the Saudi Green Initiative and the wider Middle East Green initiative to ensure a sustainable future.
Red Sea Global, the developer behind the Red Sea giga-project, is committed to preserving and enhancing the environment in which they operate.
The Mangrove Nursery is a testament to this commitment, as the seedlings will be cared for in the nursery for approximately eight months until they grow to 80cm, at which point they will be transplanted in designated mangrove parks within the destination.
Mangrove forests are known for their ability to store carbon, manage flooding, stabilize coastlines, and provide shelter for fish and other organisms, making them one of nature's super ecosystems.
The successful cultivation of seedlings forms a central pillar in Red Sea Global's ambition to achieve a 30 percent net conservation benefit across their destination.
According to Raed Albasseet, group chief environment and sustainability officer at Red Sea Global, "These trees are among the most efficient tools we have for carbon sequestration, with the capacity to absorb up to five to 10 times more carbon than other plants.
