Protecting Stray Animals from Heatstroke in Saudi Arabia: The Importance of Access to Water
As the mercury rises during the summer months, animals on the streets of Saudi Arabia are feeling the heat.
Mayaser Bundagji, a prominent animal rights activist in Jeddah, has called on residents to help protect stray animals by providing them with access to water.
"The easiest and most effective way to ensure strays are safe in summertime is to keep them hydrated," Bundagji told Arab News.
"All you have to do is make sure they have access to fresh water at all times." Bundagji, who is the chairman of the board of Get Along With Me Association for Animal Welfare, is using social media platforms to raise awareness about the impact of heat on animals, including dehydration.
During the summer months, the association sees a significant drop in adoption as people become too busy or travel.
Animal lover Waleed Mirza echoes Bundagji's sentiments, stating that even small acts of kindness can significantly impact the well-being of animals.
Mirza and his friends provide food and water for stray dogs in Obhur, a remote area about 30km north of Jeddah.
"This area is very isolated and it is far away from people," Mirza said.
"It has a large number of dogs spreading everywhere and they are suffering because of the extreme heat and many of them starve to death." Hassan Abu Al-Jadayel, a 59-year-old bird lover, also spoke to Arab News about the importance of providing water for animals during the summer.
"Birds also suffer from the consequences of heat stress during the summer period," he said.
"I wish people were aware of it." As the temperatures continue to soar, it is important to remember that animals are also feeling the heat.
By providing them with access to water and other basic necessities, we can help ensure their safety and well-being during the summer months.
As temperatures soared during the summer months, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture and the Saudi Wildlife Authority issued a joint statement urging residents to take precautions and promote animal welfare in accordance with the Gulf Cooperation Council's Animal Welfare Act.
The authorities warned that animals can suffer in hot weather, and appealed to the public to provide regular access to food and water, shelter, vaccination for pets, and protection from direct sunlight.
The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture emphasized that neglecting or abusing animals is a punishable offense and that they would investigate any reported cases of animal abuse.
The statement came as the number of cases of animal suffering due to the heatwave had doubled compared to previous years, with many of them being dehydrated.
Animal welfare organizations also urged the public to adopt pets from shelters, rather than buying them from breeders, in order to reduce the number of stray animals on the streets.
They also stressed the importance of spaying or neutering pets to control the population, and providing proper care for animals in general.
The authorities are taking steps to educate the public about animal welfare and to investigate cases of animal abuse.
They are also encouraging people to report any cases of animal neglect or abuse they witness.
With increased public awareness and education, it is hoped that animals in Saudi Arabia will be better protected from suffering in the future.
