Spanish police announced on Friday the recovery of Pablo Picasso's 1919 painting, 'Still Life with Guitar,' which had gone missing earlier this month from a shipment intended for an exhibition in Granada.
The small framed artwork was part of a larger group of art pieces moved from Madrid to Granada for display.
After noticing its absence following the crates' unpacking on October 10, the organizers of the exhibit filed a police complaint.
The police investigation revealed that the painting may not have been loaded onto the transport truck before departure from Madrid.
The historical heritage brigade continued their inquiry, though no information was provided about potential criminal involvement.
Police released images showing forensic experts in sterile suits examining the recovered artwork.
The painting, owned by a private collector and registered with Interpol’s global database of Stolen Works of Art, contains nearly 57,000 entries, indicating its significance within the international art world.
The CajaGranada Foundation, organizers of the exhibition, noted that their security footage showed only 57 works being unloaded from the vehicle, despite the expectation of 58 pieces.
